Traditional British pub breakfast

The "The Grey Friar - JD Wetherspoon" in Preston, England, is a typical representative of the widely known British pub chain J D Wetherspoon, famous for its affordable food and drinks as well as its unique, often historic buildings. The pub is named "Grey Friar" in reference to the Franciscan monks, also known as Grey Friars, who founded a monastery nearby in the early 13th century. This monastery, established around 1220, gave its name to the area, even though it was closed under Henry VIII in the 16th century and later demolished. The building of the current pub is modern but retains a touch of historical connection to Preston through its naming and Wetherspoon's tradition.

Best fish and chips in Preston

The menu at the "Grey Friar" offers a wide range of classic British pub dishes that reflect the typical Wetherspoon style: straightforward, hearty, and appealing to a broad audience. Particularly popular is the "Traditional Breakfast," a substantial meal featuring fried eggs, crispy bacon, and sausages, beloved by both locals and visitors. Another highlight is the "Fish and Chips," which features fresh cod in a crispy beer batter served with thick chips – a dish that perfectly captures British culinary culture. For meat lovers, there is the "Medium Steak," grilled to juicy perfection and served with sides like onion rings, while the "Three Small Plates" option provides a creative way to sample various flavors such as spicy chicken wings or mini burgers. For dessert, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding" tempts with a warm, sweet cake drizzled with toffee sauce and served with vanilla ice cream, rounding off the visit on a sweet note.

Cozy pub with outdoor seating

The drink selection is a central part of the pub experience. The "Grey Friar" boasts an extensive choice of real ales, including classics like "Ruddles Best" and regularly changing guest ales, often from local breweries in Lancashire. Beer quality is ensured by a dedicated cellar manager who makes sure every pint is perfectly served. In addition to beers, there is a solid selection of craft beers, wines, and spirits, as well as freshly brewed Lavazza coffee, which is especially popular among breakfast guests. The option to order via the Wetherspoon app makes service quick and convenient, emphasizing the pub's modern approach.

Friendly service at Wetherspoon pub

The atmosphere in the "Grey Friar" is open and lively, featuring a modern, spacious design with elevated seating areas on the sides and in the back of the pub. The décor is functional and inviting, with traditional elements like wood paneling that hark back to pub culture, and a clear layout that accommodates both solo guests and groups. The pub is known for its music-free environment, which puts conversations front and center and creates a relaxed vibe. An outdoor area provides additional space and is a popular option in nice weather, although dogs are only allowed outside the fenced area, which has sparked some debate among guests.

I was there to write my thesis. I sat at a corner with my coffee ☕. It's was such a homely atmosphere and on top of it, the coffee taste great and has a free top up. What a nice deal.

Отличное место. Вкусный завтрак. Я рада, что масло к завтраку хорошего качества. Это единственный wetherspoon, где к завтраку подают вкусное масло, а не вегетарианское.
